Hi from Perth Australia
I'm planning my installation and cannot find details of what audio is output on the HDX left vs right channels (pins 13 and 31). There must be a reason for stereo output being provided so my question is should I send the signals to a stereo input on the audio panel or simplify things by combining them into a mono input? Is there any benefit in sending left and right to separate mono inputs on the audio panel?

You can just wire for mono, but who knows what features Dynon may introduce that require stereo later on. For example, if Dynon introduces their version of the OnSpeed flight energy management system, stereo audio is an important requirement.

In fact, one of the issues we've experienced with installing OnSpeed systems is that many aircraft have either mono-only audio systems, or only have muting stereo inputs (non-Dynon type intercoms). As a result I re-introduced my audio mixer products that can convert any audio system (any type of intercom, or even no intercom) to support stereo audio.

The first production run of the redesigned mixers (AMX-2A, AMX-4A, AMX-10A) is underway.... will be available from MakerPlane. The -2A and -4A are indentical in function to the originals introduced 15 years ago, the -10A is a new design, driven by the requirements of the OnSpeed team.

Hi Vern. Thanks for responding and clearing that up.
I've looked at your work with admiration many times and will you have prompted me to subscribed to your Facebook page. I'm trying not to get distracted from building but you are making it difficult. 😁
Cheers

Stereo isn't used currently, but pin 13 is Left. An excerpt from one of the diagrams in the manual:

I believe what that means is, although the system is technically stereo capable, there is currently no difference in the audio being sent on the right and left channels. So you wouldn't get any benefit from sending the audio output to separate inputs on a comm panel. It's possible that could change in the future (which is why stereo capability is built in). But even if they implement stereo it would be unlikely to present an advantage to sending the channels to separate audio inputs elsewhere. It would be far more likely to support the spatial function stereo has always been intended to do, different portions of an audio signal to different ears, but still the same audio signal. If you're interested in connections to a stereo capable audio panel, an example was discussed here recently that you might find useful.

Left engine alerts on the left channel. Right engine alerts on the right channel. o_O

If you wanted to preserve the Left-Right as separate channels, I suppose you could connect the Dynon alerts to the entertainment inputs of the PS Engineering panel. They would get muted if there was comm radio activity which might not be what you want if copying a long IFR clearance when you were headed into the terrain...

So, the comment from Dynon, "Stereo isn't used currently..." in this thread;
isn't strictly true. Interesting.

EDIT: Just occurred to me that could potentially provide an advantage in routing to separate inputs on some audio panels. Some PS Engineering audio panels have IntelliAudio, which can route separate inputs to different ears. I assume some other panel manufactureres do something similar. That means routing to separate audio panel inputs could give you left engine alerts in the left ear, and vice versa. Whether or not that would be worth using up a separate input would be up to the individual builder to decide.
