Beside having an experimental aircraft with a Dynon D-10A interfaced to my Lowrance 2000C, I also commute on a motorcycle everyday to work and I purchased a HUD from Motion Research called SportVue. It attaches to my helmet and displays speed, RPM, Gear and radar. The display is focused on infinity and sunlight readable. The device projects the data in the riders peripheral vision so it does not interfere with the line of sight vision. see http://www.sportvue.com/. They are coming out with other products that include a video display.

I have been very interested in having the ability to have a HUD to display the Dynon data. I talked to the guys at MR and they have a developers kit that could be interfaced to the dynon. I am just know looking into the developers kit to see what it will take to interface it to one of the data streams coming from the Dynon.

All types of data could be selected and displayed. For example

In approach mode - IAS, AOA, RPM, left/right of course and Alarms (Gear, Stall, Carb ice, etc)
In enroute mode - Steering data, Altitude, airspeed, Ground speed, Dist to WP and Alarms.

Engine data could also be displayed if you have the engine monitor.

I was wondering if Dynon has looked into this since MR is located in Seattle. Seems to me there is a pretty straight forward marriage of 2 products that will produce a capability no other product has. I'll be glad to talk to you guys since I currently use both products and have extensive knowledge in aircraft systems, system integration and software development. Yeh! I work you know where.

Just curious if anyone at Dynon has given this concept any thought?  Several years ago at Oshkosh, there was a vendor with a functional HUD, but he disappeared.  I think this was before the glass panel revolution.

I would think that development of a HUD would be a pretty simple process for Dynon, given that all of the primary flight info is already digitized and just needs to be projected onto a HUD combiner.

As you can see, I'm anxiously awaiting such a development ...

I'd be more than happy to be a Dynon HUD beta tester!   ;)

[This should probably be posed in the EFIS forum, but I didn't want to start a new thread on the same subject -- feel free to move it if more appropriate]

It's on the list of neat ideas, but no program or very serious thought to producing a HUD at the moment.

Count me for requesting a HUD. I would think it would be simple as reversing the text/screen somewhat and then no background. :) shouldn't take more than a weekend.

A HUD is old technology. A far better answer is a motion-sensing headset such as the Army chopper pilots use. It is clear so you can see the "real" world through it, but as you turn your head you can also see whatever it is programmed to display. Thus, you might "see" terrain beneath your feet from the terrain database; enhanced graphics of towers and airspace to make them stand out; graphics of airplanes out your left window showing their heading, airspeed, altitude, and transponder squawk; etc.

Just as third-world nations are skipping the intermediate technology of land-line telephones, so too should aviation leapfrog old military technology in favor of greater utility.
