I am new to the GTN-650 and the Dynon system so I am curious how they integrate...and then...how does the new HITS play into the mix?

I have a dual SV-1000 system and a Garmin GTN-650. The airplane is not flying right now (getting close) and I was wondering if anyone has any experience with HITS and the GTN can shed some light on the subject.

Specifically, prior to take off on other EFIS systems, the pilot presses the TOGA button and the command bars pop up to X degrees nose up and commands a wings level depiction and then the pilot can center the HDG BUG to runway heading and press HDG and then the pilot can also press NAV to arm the NAV mode...with this configuration on takeoff the command bars will command to fly the airplane on the runway heading and pitch to the X degrees nose up and then when the course needle centers the NAV mode will engage and the FD will capture and fly the programed course to the first fix and then down the road it keeps flying in NAV mode to the next fix.

Is this a function in the GTN and/or Dynon?

What exactly is HITS? I envision programming in a number of fixes with altitudes and then the HITS will display a number of "fly through" windows (boxes or circles) that the pilot can visually see on the screen then fly through the windows that are displayed...so like the windows will display a a climb to ABC fix at 3000 feet then turn right to DEF fix at 5000 feet then level off for a programmed route with turns at various fixes followed by descending windows to cross TUV fix at 4500 then a right turn to cross XYZ fix at 3000 feet then to cross the FAF at 1700 with a DA displayed at 300 right before the synthetic runway with the missed approach course and altitudes displayed past the runway.

Is this how HITS works?

If not, is VNAV a function that the GTN can program and then command the SV to maintain 5000 until the VNAV bars descend and then capture the VNAV and fly the approach?

Any experience to share would be most helpful!!

THANKS!!!

If you have a flight plan entered and you are NAV-ing it with VNAV enabled, the FD will show you the pitch required to attain the VS (or IAS) to your altitude set in the bugs. Lateral is a function of the GTN, if you have the GTN selected for navigation. Pitch is a function of SkyView bug settings.

Yes, if you have a precision approach selected in the GTN with VNAV, SkyView will fly the set altitude to intercept and then use the glideslope information from the GTN to follow the glideslope.

Yes, HITS is basically how you describe except for the vertical transition. Right now, until we have vertical planning in flight plans, it draws boxes at your current altitude or your bug altitude (if set). It does not provided slanted boxes for ascents, descents or GTN glide slopes. It does, however, show boxes for VFR Vertical Guidance to the runway.

Hope that helps.

Thanks (as always) Dynon for the quick and informative response.

I really look forward to the evolution of the HITS to show the vertical guidance...really cutting edge...because up until HITS, a pilot can program "the box" and see on the screen fixes and altitudes for the enroute, approach, and missed approach and then the pilot has to mentally picture what it looks like...with HITS the picture will be presented on the PFD and the pilot can see how the planned route and altitudes fly through/past the colorful red and yellow mountains and valleys.

KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!!
