I was considering installing a KNS-81 NAV to my HS-34, hoping to have the D100 act as an indicator. The wiki indicated that there may be issues with the Bendix/King products. Called Dynon, and asked if they could look into this particular model, and they gladly took on the challenge. The resultant response, however, was disappointing. No details were offered, however the tech support indicated that it would probably not work.

The KNS-81 has a built in converter. It does

The Dynon wiki indicates that units with a built-in converter might work, but chances are it won't.

Just wondering if anyone has had success (failure) interfacing the HS-34 with a Bendix/King NAV (especially with an internal converter).

By the way I am pleased with the promptness of the Dynon support tech. Just disappointed that the HS-34 device I bought interfaces to seemingly only a small group of NAV units out on the market.

The King stuff has always been a pain with integration. They love you to have to use their proprietary stuff so that is why they do this to their units.

This is not so much Dynon's fault as it is King for not following industry standards with their connections.

I suppose this means I should scrap plans for a King KN-53 nav receiver? Is there a list of nav receivers that will work? How about NARCO products? I thought one of the major advantages of the HS-34 was to increase interface flexibility?

We won't be able to connect to it unfortunately. General compatibility information is in our wiki pages. In particular, see

http://wiki.dynonavionics.com/HS34_Documentation
and
http://wiki.dynonavionics.com/GPS_Serial_Compatibility_and_Configuration_Settings

Though this doesn't solve your problem, here's a little background on how the HS34 came to be... we basically saw a need to be able to connect to the 430, which is the wildly popular and only affordable IFR WAAS GPS/NAV/COM in existence. So, the HS34 is primarily an ARINC-429 converter when you really get down to it. While we were at it, we added some more serial inputs (our screens only have one each), knobs, a light sensor, synthetic voice output, and an analog interface.

So the analog output conforms to the ARINC analog standard, and we tested it with a few radios, particularly the 430 and the SL30 (ironically, neither of these actually need the analog connectivity). Since the release of the product, we've learned that lots of NAV radios have interfaces that don't quite conform to that standard and therefore don't work with the HS34. Unfortunately, there's no cost-effective way for us to solve these incompatibilities (different radios may need different hardware, etc), and the demand for the analog interface has been pretty low to begin with. So for customers that buy the HS34 and find it does not work with their radio, we'll absolutely refund your purchase price. If we had to do it all over again with everything we know now, we'd might well have left the analog interface out of the HS34.
