HS 34 Dimming Issue

My HS 34 seems to "hunt" for a light level at anything less than full sunlight.  At dusk, the unit will snap the knob backlights on full (it's off during the day), and then start ratcheting down the scale until it hits full dim, then goes full bright and starts the cycle over again.  Each "step" is about one second duration.  Very distracting, especially since it takes my D-10A screen along for the same ride.  After a while and with increasing darkness the unit seems to settle down somewhat, but it have not seen it completely stabilize yet.  I have not flown it in full night conditions yet, either.

The light sensor on the face is not blocked, and the canopy is a full bubble (Harmon Rocket).

Any ideas?

We had, quite a long time ago, a few AP74s, but not HS34 that I can find, that suffered from some light leakage which caused a bit of a feedback loop from the onboard LED lighting. When was your HS34 purchased / what is its serial number? We probably ought to have your HS34 back here for a look.

Interesting you bring up the light leakage issue... There's a bunch of light coming out of the hole in the faceplate where the anchor screw lives - I thought that odd.

Anyway, the unit was purchased a few weeks ago NIB from a gent who didn't need it. Unsure of its vintage, but the PN is 100755-000 and the SN 001497.

OK, flew it into almost total darkness last night and the unit quits dimming entirely and acts like full sunlight. The HS34 has zero lighting and drives the D10 to full bright.

Is the Dynon team going to Copperstate?

Great!  Make sure he reads my latest posts...  I'll be there on Friday with my airplane and asking pointed questions.

Kirk is one of our sales specialists, so he's not necessarily our best resource to troubleshoot a technical issue. He won't have spares or repair capability at the show.

As we say, we can't think of anything more for you to do, and we probably need to get that unit back here for a look. Please contact us via email or phone to get an RMA.
