HS34 wiring

The HS34 must have its own DB9 serial connector in order to update the software. The instructions for installing version 4.0 clearly state, "The RS232-RX, RS232-TX, and one of the GND wires must be connected to a standard PC or laptop comm port". The HS34 pinout listed in the WIKI list Pin 1 as the Serial 1 RX, and Pin 14 as the Serial 1 TX. There is no pin available for serial ground.
This is not the case for the D-10A...It has all three pins used...RX, TX, and ground.
Where do we get the ground for the DB9 for the HS34?

Thanks for all the help!

This is aircraft ground. The HS34 needed so many connections that we didn't have spare pins to give you an extra ground. You can use any ground you have in the plane.

So to keep all three wires coming from the same place, I can tap into the ground from the HS34, pin 17?
I assume that there will be a ground in the Serial 2 DB9 coming from the SL30, GPS, Etc. and that I will need to install a ground in the HS34 Serial 2 DB9 as well? Same way, maybe?

Thanks,

Yes, tap into pin 17 for your PC ground.

The SL-30 and GPS don't generally need separate ground wires since they already use aircraft ground. Just run the signal lines and it should all work fine. You need the ground for the PC because it isn't hooked to the aircraft.

I did this but was unable to connect to the HS34. Also, when I updated the D-10A to version 4.0, the EDC was not detected. Could all this be caused by my not having set up the network yet? I assume that I will have to reload the 4.0 when I get the EDC detected??

Thanks,
