Interperating FAA ADS-B check

G'day Dynon,

I have your 261 transponder linked to a Garmin 430W as my ADS-B out solution. I recently did the FAA ADS-B check, i.e. sent them an email with the aircraft details and they responded with a report and I am after a little help figuring out if my system is working properly.

All the position and kinematic data are good. Under the listing of Integrity and Accuracy I get 0 for SIL and SDA which I understand is normal for non certified avionics. What I am not sure about is the fact that I have an 18 second Validity (VAL 1.59%) Failure. I'm not even sure what this is or how to go about trouble shooting it. Any ideas would be much appreciated.
Cheers

Nigel,
Your SIL/SDA should not be 0 if things are configured correctly. They should be 3/2. You should fix that before worrying anything else, since the mis-configuration may be the source of other errors.

You need to be connected directly to the transponder with a serial wire out from the 430, and you have to be using the ADS-B+ format (not just ADS-B). Only versions 5 and newer of the 430 firmware have ADS-B.

Thanks for the quick response. I am pretty sure I have the 430 connected directly via serial to the Txpdr and that it has the latest firmware but I will double check and also to see that I have it configured correctly to ADS-B+.

I checked today that I have 5.03 version software in the 430. I found that I had in the Main RS232 Config menu the ADS-B OUT rather than ADS-B OUT+. I have since changed it and will report back how it goes. Thanks for the config help.

So a couple of problems on my end with the configuration. I changed the Garmin output to ADS-B+, and also configured the Skyview transponder menu to use the Garmin as its source vice Skyview which was how it was. Unfortunately after these changes I get a transponder error saying the GPS source is offline. When constructing the aircraft I did hook the Garmin serial port up with the required resistor. Any ideas would be much appreciated.

What is on the other end of said wire with resistor? It should be going directly to the transponder and nowhere else.

Especially in Tech Support issues like this, pictures (screenshots) are worth a thousand words. To record a screenshot, insert a USB flash drive and push buttons 2+7. The screenshot will be recorded in a "screenshots" folder on the USB flash drive.

If:
* You have changed your Garmin unit configuration of the serial port you used to output ADS-B+ format...
* You have connected that serial port TX, through the resistor, to Pin 3 of the SV-XPNDR-261/262 (RX for GPS data)...
* You have configured SkyView: SETUP MENU > TRANSPONDER SETUP > GPS DATA (xxxxx): GARMIN ADS-B/ADS-B+
...

It should work. Some common issues:
* You're in the hangar, so the Garmin GPS can't see the sky and get a lock on the GPS constellation, so it cannot provide a good position / data stream.
* Your Gamin unit has not new enough, or hasn't been updated, to have the option of ADS-B+ (actually configured to output ADS-B format, not ADS-B+ format)
* The serial port you configured on the Garmin unit isn't actually the serial port you wired up to the SV-XPNDR-261/262
* You actually connected the RX pin of the serial port on the Garmin unit, not the TX pin.
* Your SkyView display is not updated to the latest version of firmware (currently, v13.0.3) or your SV-XPNDR-261/262 isn't updated to the latest version of transponder firmware (currently, [on STATUS line] SW02.04).

Let us know what you find.

Thanks for the detailed reply, I will get to work and report back.

If I just replaced my old Skyview GPS with the new ADS-B one and selected Skyview as the source would that work?

We're not yet shipping the SV-GPS-2020 (the new one that would enable ADS-B compliance). But yes, if you replaced the SV-GPS-250 with the upcoming SV-GPS-2020, it will be usable as the GPS source for ADS-B out.

That said, your current SkyView + GTN combinatio is known to work - you've either got a wiring or configuration issue, and we can definitely work on getting you squared away.
