The news release about Jeppesen partnership is fantastic news for non USA customers!
http://blog.dynonavionics.com/2010/07/dynon-avionics-announces-jeppesen.html

As a non USA customer I have 2 questions for Dynon:

I am very familiar with the Garmin Aviation GPS database for South Africa. They do a good job of depicting most airspaces and airfields in our country accurately. Some other GPS vendors that say they derive their information from Jeppesen is poor and very little information is contained in their databases compared to Garmin for my South Africa.

So my 2 questions:
1) Will the Dynon Skyview Jeppesen Database for non USA customers be as good and or better than competing Garmin Aviation Databases?

2) Would we be able to preview the Jeppesen Database for our regions or how would we be able to get specific information to ensure it is complete?

PS: It boils down to if I need to fit a Garmin next to my 2xSkyviews to get the complete aviation database picture on the panel.

Thank you in advance, ;)
Kind Regards
Rudi

Re: Jeppesen Partnership and World Aviation Databa

We are just getting started at the international database support, so it will take us some time to learn just how good the databases are in various places.

What we get from Jeppesen is what we get. I don't know if Garmin supplements the data somehow, or if other vendors are cutting down the data. We are not "deriving" our data from Jeppesen, we are directly using that database.

Unfortunately, Jeppesen would not allow us to give our users any free or discounted preview of the data. We tried to negotiate this but it didn't happen. Probably the best thing we can do for you is for you to give us a few airports that you know about and we can tell you what data you would have for them in the database we get.

Thank you for the quick reply.

Thanks for the offer to look into a couple of airports for me...Do you have the information for South Africa already, or should I ask a little bit later closer to your anticipated release date?

PS: Anyone else knows if Garmin uses Jeppesen or enhances their aviation data.

Kind Regards
Rudi

Re: Jeppesen Partnership and World Aviation Databa

The garmin site does say Jeppesen NavData.

https://fly.garmin.com/fly-garmin/aviation_database_cycles.jsp

I can't believe that Garmin enhances the Jeppesen nav data. If Garmin had better data why use Jeppesen.

I do know it's not perfect as I have found one airport (CKS8) that is in the Canadian Flight Suppliment (CFS) but not in Garmin's GPS495 Nav database.

Having said that, it will be interesting to see how similar the Skyview and Garmin navigation databases are. I plan on purchasing the Skyview (Jeppesen) map when it's available - free preview or not. Skyview definitely has better looking terrain so I expect good things with the nav map. On the other hand Garmin has AOPA data, routing, downloadable flight database, etc.

I wouldn't give up the Skyview for a G3X, but I have an open panel and plans for adding a Garmin GDU370 based on features available in the Garmin system but not with Skyview. That and the fact that the panel is portrait and will accomodate the GDU370 but not the Skyview.
