I was just looking at a few posts and noticed that it was recommended to disconnect the keep alive power due to power cycling problems.  Is this true?  This was not stated in my installation manual.  Are there other updates and are they posted on the discussion board somewhere?  Thanks,  Steve.

This is from the release notes for the most recent version of the software:

5.1 5/26/09
Note: It is no longer recommended that Keep Alive be connected EFIS and EMS products.

The release notes are a great place to find updates like this. It has also been rolled into the latest version of the installation manual, which you can download from our documentation page.

Any chance of a fix for this? I would really like to connect the keep alive so the date/clock stays on. I dont have a GPS or EFI.

We'd been through a few iterations of fixes, and each one didn't fix everyone. So, keep alive will not be supported in the future.

If you have a backup battery, that will keep the time.

If you don't, most issues we had with keep alive were between the backup battery and keep alive. So if you don't have a battery, feel free to connect it.

One more thing - one of the issues with keep alive was that the unit could get in a state where it would need to have ALL power removed in order to get it to reboot. So you might want to have an accessible switch/fuse that you can cycle if you do connect it.

The bottom line is, the worst that you're going to experience is a unit that doesn't want to power on on rare occasion (until you cycle all power) or an aircraft battery that's being depleted (though we think that's only when an internal battery is installed, but we're not 100% on that). So, if you can live with those two risks, feel free to try it. It's not going to blow the unit up or anything :)

One other thing: I believe even the cheap "receiver only" GPS units will update the unit with satellite time. They are so cheap now, I can't imagine not wanting one if only for accurate course and ground speed.
