Lasar system and RPM

I've read the posts regarding lasar systems and the RPM readings being erratic above 1800 RPM. I put a 30 ohm resistor is series and the readings smoothed out, but I was wondering if the 30 ohm resistor is too much? I'm going to test the RPM soon, but was wondering if I'm making an error in the meantime. Thanks for anyone's help!

If it's working ok then it's just fine, you can't 'hurt' it.
