Master Caution Light Requirement With Skyview

Folks,

I'm in the avionics shopping phase of my RV-6 project. It will have a dual 7" Skyview installation with EMS and VPX-Pro.

I am aware that the system can present messages and alerts, but I am debating the merits of putting a discreet Master Caution light on the top of the panel just below the pilot's line of sight.

Such an installation is the norm on certified aircraft. Among those currently using Skyview, what are your opinions about the utility of having an external Master Caution light?

Thanks,

What I did may not work for all, but I used an alternator "idiot light" and mounted it right along side of my master switch. I hope that bright light shining at me tells me I have left the master swtich on.

We support a master caution, but we find the audio announcement that says "OIL PRESSURE" or "CAUTION" right in your ear is even more effective and thus the caution light is a bit overkill.

I am installing a master caution light, as while I also have the audio warnings, they require an audio panel, radio aux input or other intercom setup to be heard. The chance of not hearing the warning is slim, but the master warning light is driven directly from the SkyView EMS module, and so takes a couple of failure points out of the equation.

For those that are space constrained bear in mind that the Skyview display itself will flash a warning message based on the parameters you set. It is the same event that triggers the external master caution you wish to install. A master caution light would simply be an additional signal but I decided not to install it since my Skyview is in my primary scan area.
