If it outputs the Garmin TIS RS-232 format, then it will work. I couldn't find a manual on their site, so it's not clear what format the stated RS-232 output is that they mention in the brochure.

Here's Monroys answer:

Hi Tom

The data output is ARINC 429 format which is the standard for TCAS systems. This option will be available by spring 2011. We thought about RS-232 but there are several different formats. ARINC 429 is compatible with the Aspen, G430, G530 and others

Thank you for inquiring

Currently we do not support traffic over ARINC-429. Every other traffic device we find common in our customer's airplanes (Garmin 330 transponder, Trig Transponder, Zaon, Navworx ADS-B) outputs over the much less expensive serial method, so we don't support it via ARINC. They also all output using the same standard, so in our opinion there is a very common standard for traffic over serial. We'd be happy to share the protocol with them.

If there is enough demand for traffic over serial it is possible for us to add it.

Have the same problem with an Avidyne TAS 600 that the Dynon can't display.

Are you sure of that? The Ryan 9900BX on which the current Avidyne product is based definitely used RS232 connections, and at least some of the Avidyne marketing material for the TAS 600 series mentions RS232 interconnects.

Richard,
Actually, we said we knew very little about the Avidyne / Ryan devices, and we were told they were ARINC-429 output devices, which is why we said we wouldn't be supporting them in the first release.

If they do have serial and you can find documentation on the output format, we can tell you if they will work with the formats we support.

How are you connecting the Avidyne TAS to the 530?  I've never seen an installation manual for the TAS, but the Garmin installation manuals for the 400/500 series clearly describe how to configure an RS232 connection for a Ryan TCAD 9900B or 9900BX.  Unfortunately, the in and out channel format selections on the main RS232 config page of the 400/500 are just designated as Ryan TCAD (at least in the version of the installation manual that I have), so that's really of no help in figuring out just what the data format is.  But, as I wrote before, it is definitely the case that the older models used RS232 connections, not ARINC 429.

Dynon,

Have you an email address I can send you the responses I have received from Avidyne. I thought I had asked the question clearly enough but I don't think their replies move this issue forward.

Given your information about the settings in the 430, it's likely that the Ryan boxes have a different, proprietary format than what we currently receive. You can send your information to support at dynonavionics dot com. Just mention that you were asked to send that information, and also provide a link to this thread, and it will get to the right area for review.
