Mounting Stud Extensions

I have a composite panel that is much thicker than the metal the studs on my D-10 EMS were meant for.  What is the common way to extend these studs about 1/2 inch?  What is the thread size?

I called this morning and was told 4-40. this is terribly small and I don't think is correct.
