newbie start-up question

Hello, Dynon user community. I just purchased an immaculate and unused D-10 from eBay. The thing powers up great, indicates software version 1.05. I get the altitude, airspeed and horizon display after boot-up, but see no heading tape across the top. Since I have yet to do the magnetometer calibration, I was just wondering if this was normal. Once I wire up a serial d-sub connector and find a laptop with a serial port (my Dell Inspiron 6000 does not have any!) I can run the upgrades and the calibration program, but I was just curious if I had a glitch in the meantime... Please reassure me this is normal.

This is normal. We shipped earlier units with the compass turned off since it isn't calibrated at the factory and is usually very, very wrong.

Just got to Menu->More->Setup->Clutter->More->HDG to turn it on.
