No DME Reading

Gentlemen,

I have a D180/HS34/Garmin 430.  Everything works swimmingly well EXCEPT I cannot seem to get a DME reading when tuned to a VORTAC.

When I have the main NAV source set to GPS1, the Garmin 430, everything works like it is supposed to, even displaying the little brown line with the circle pointing to the secondary source NAV2, the NAV radio on my GPS.  And, like it is supposed to, at the top of the HSI page displaying the magenta GPS line I can see the distance to the next waypoint.

However, when I switch main NAV sources on the HS34 from GPS1 to NAV2 (again, NAV2 being the NAV radio on my Garmin 430W), the main pointer turns green, shows course deviation, and spins like it is suppose to BUT there is no distance to the VOR displayed even though the VOR has DME capability.

I am quite certain that the D180 is fine, and the Garmin 430 is fine, but I must have some small setting either on the GPS or the D180 not set properly.

Any thoughts?

You don't have a DME receiver in the airplane, so you will never get the distance.

The 430 doesn't do DME. You need an independent box in the airplane to do so and wire this into the HS34. DME's use a whole different antenna and frequency than a VOR, Localizer, or glideslope.

You are generally allowed to use the 430's GPS side as a DME when flying a VLOC, but you will need to watch this distance on the 430's screen- it doesn't send it to us as a VLOC DME over ARINC so we won't show it as the DME to the VOR.
