OAT failure

Hi,

I bought the D10A with EDC and OAT-probe in March 2005. The whole system is wired with the originally STEINAIR OEM INSTALL HARNESS. Up to now the OPERATING PROGRAM 2.08 was installed.

Unfortunately I have already problems with occasional failure of the OAT from the beginning. After that I switch the EFIS one- or twice off and on and everything functioned again.

Now I update to 2.11 - now is the following problem: without any reason appears the announcement "Remote Compass Not Detected" and "OAT Not Detected" and/or. "OAT Not Found". It break down the OAT *and* the compass! After switching off and on everything functioned again.

The wiring was checked 5 or 6 times in the meantime. It was not possible to simulate a break down with shaking or knocking on the wiring and connections.

Do you have any idea?

Regards
René

And at least: your EFIS is the best one what I know and see in other aircraft!

Hi Rene,

More often than not, the "remote compass not detected" message means that there is a physical connectivity issue between the EFIS and the compass. Prior to version 2.11, connectivity problems would not be annunciated with a specific message like you're now seeing. However, the OAT, being connected through the EDC, would still appear to get knocked out exactly as you describe if there was a problem between the remote compass and the EFIS. So it may be that you're experiencing the same problems that you were before, but now it's just more apparent since the new software can detect when the remote compass goes away.

A few troubleshooting questions:
- When you upgraded the software on the EFIS, was the remote compass connected? There is software on the remote compass that gets updated at the same time as the EFIS's. If the EFIS and compass software are out of sync, you could see some strange effects.

- Does it make difference whether or not the aircraft's engine is on? Could it be vibration related at one of the connectors?

- In addition to testing the connectors, have you checked the entire length of wire to make sure there isn't a break that manifests itself as an intermittent connection?

We had a similiar problem with one of our installation. When we spliced an extention to the OAT , one strand , (hard to see) pierced through the heat shrink and contacted the shielding. We had two units and tried back and forth with the working unit.
