OAT wiring to EMS

I have the 6 Cyl Injected version of the EMS which came with the 100433-000 OAT probe. This probe has two wires, both are white with black stripe. The install manual I have was the latest from your site (3/25/2005). On page 19 - 20, it describes the Outside Air Temperature Sensor install, but it talks about a blue and red wire on the OAT, which I don't have. Now the OAT that I purchased with my EFIS had the OAT (100433-001) which has a shielded 3 conductor wire (red, blue and yellow). Where could I find some updated info on how to connect the OAT to my EMS?

Thanks
Ray Doerr.

Also, Ive wired the OAT for the EFIS to the EFIS and it works except I had to offset the temp by +13 because it was reading 13 degrees low. What is the temp update rate from the EDC? The reason I asked is that when I used a blow dryer to see if I could get it to show an increasing temperature, it did not update while it was heated up. It seemed to jump from 72 degrees (room temperature) to over 100, but it took well over 30 seconds for this to happen. Any ideas why?

Hi Ray,

I apologize that we haven't gotten our documentation up to date with what we ship. The OAT that we now ship with the EMS-D10 is only two wires. It does not matter which wire you connect to the OAT input and which you connect to ground. We're working on updating that installation guide to reflect that and other changes.

As for your EFIS OAT, could you tell me when you received your OAT? We've had some trouble with OATs shipped before June of this year. The behavior you describe sounds like your OAT could be defective.

Yes, my credit card was charged for the OAT and EDC on Jun 24, 2005. Does this sound like I need a new OAT?

Ray,

Actually, I just noticed that you indicated that your EFIS OAT probe is p/n 100433-001. This is definitely the newer variety and so far we have not seen any problems with it. You should not need a new OAT.

There are a few things to check on the EFIS. One of them is likely to be causing the behavior you're seeing. It basically boils down to a software/configuration issue:

First, let's make sure that you have the latest version of the EFIS operating software. From the EFIS main menu, press MORE, SETUP, MORE, VRSION. If you have 02.09.01 you are up to date. If it is older than this version, you should update the EFIS software first. This is done with a PC via the RS-232 serial cable you probably have wired up already. Visit www.dynonavionics.com for the latest Support Program, EFIS operating software, and instructions on uploading software updates.

Second, make sure that you have the EFIS set to read the correct OAT type. Bring up the main EFIS menu and go to MORE, SETUP, MORE, OAT. Along the bottom you should see the word Installed, and following that either N, Y, 1, or 2. If it says Y, this implies that the EFIS software is not up to date as discussed above. Otherwise, press either of the bottom left two buttons to cycle that display until it reads Installed: 2. You should also be able to zero out the adjustment which is also in that same menu screen.

All of our products' installation and user guides are available at www.dynonavionics.com.

Look down the left side of the page and under the Support section you'll find a documentation link for each product.

Just received my EMS-D10 with the OAT probe. The probe received has 3 wires plus the ground shielding. The installation instructions indicate only 2 wires are used. Did I receive the wrong probe (the probe baggie is labeled for the EFIS) or are you using the same probe for both instruments now? If this is the case, which wire do I use to connect to the EMS-D10?

Hi Roger,

I took a look at your invoice - it looks like we accidentally sold and shipped you the wrong OAT probe. While the EFIS OAT probe that you have in your possession can be adapted for use with your EMS, the part meant for the EMS actually cheaper. To swap it out for the proper probe (and be refunded the difference - $37 vs $65), give us a call at 425-402-0553 and we can set up the exchange.
