I am building an RV-9A QB. I decided some time ago to install Dynon, and already installed in the wings their AP mounting hardware (not the servo itself yet) and their heated Pitot tube. So far, so good.

Now I want to run wiring and what-not in the fuselage. As I look more at the Dynon products I get more confused by all the information on the website and pdf docs.  Here are some starting questions:
  • I want at least one Skyview 10" display, but to show flight, navigation (map), and engine data it might get crowded. So I'm considering a second display. Candidates are a second Skyview display, 7" or 10"; or the FlightDEK-D180; or maybe an iPad.  The D-180 seems as expensive as the SV-D1000, so what is the point of the D-180? Does it do something the SV-D700 or -D1000 will not do?
  • I want to mount the elevator autopilot servo bracket in the fuselage now, but to properly place it, it looks like I'll need the servo itself. True?  I don't mind buying the servo now, but I'm not a speedy builder and it will be some years yet before the plane is flying, so I'm trying to delay purchase and installation of electronics (as they tend to improve a lot faster than other components).
  • Do iPads integrate at all in the Skyview system? Are there any benefits or dis-benefits to having an iPad as the 2nd display?

If you want your various devices to be integrated, you have to choose between:

All SkyView
or
Our various "1st Generation" instruments (EFIS-D10A, EFIS-D100, EMS-D10, EMS-D120, FlightDEK-180.

SkyView and the "1st Generation" units are NOT compatible - they will not communicate between the two product lines.

So, for a second SkyView display, your choices are the SV-D1000 (10") or SV-D700 (7") - mix and match, up to four displays.

The FlightDEK-D180 is a combination EFIS and EMS in one box. It's a very capable, very popular unit. The SV-D1000 is the heart of a SkyView system, but all by itself it only performs moving map and look-down terrain.

For a SkyView display to act as a PFD requires the addition of a SV-ADAHRS-200 (an external module that has similar sensors that are internal to the PFD portion of a FlightDEK-D180).

For a SkyView to act as an EMS requires the addition of an SV-EMS-220 (an external module that has similar sensors that are internal to the EMS portion of a FlightDEK-D180).

Servo installation - having the servo in your hand is certainly the most intuitive visual aid for installing servos into a plane, but  if you'd prefer to wait on that purchase, we do provide pretty complete specs / dimensions on our servos in our various Installation manuals.

iPads do not currently interoperate with SkyView. Some pilots find them to be quite useful in the cockpit for things other than Primary Flight Display and Moving Map.

I use IPAD Wingx Pro wifi'd to Skyradar as my other navigation source. Would be pretty cool if I could link my Wingx Pro flight plan to also drive the skyview flight plan (don't the garmin gps's do this to skyview?).

Note also that Wingx Pro (hilton software) has agreements and linkages between Wingx Pro and the Aspen Avionics MFDs---cool stuff.

We're watching the iPad stuff pretty intently, but don't have any plans at the moment.
