Have autopilot want either knob or ap, do I need both, why, or which one is best for helping with ap functions.

They're complimentary. Assuming you're asking about SkyView and not the D10/D100 series, The SV-KNOB-PANEL allows you to adjust your heading/track/altitude bugs, which are what the autopilot follows when in those modes. The SV-AP-PANEL lets you switch between autopilot modes quickly without using the on-screen controls. It's also tied to the autopilot's expert mode.

If I only had room for one, I'd probably go for the knob panel if flying VFR and the AP panel if IFR. Caveat: others may disagree with this.

An important feature for fitting the A/P panel for me was it gives you Autotrim and Trim speed scheduling, of course always providing you have Ray Allen trim controls and your trim/s are wired through the A/P panels integral relays. There is then no need for any other relays at all to work your stick trim/s.
