my ap works great except if I dial in 2000-3000 preset. Then it will pitch up in steps.. then a momentary level, then continues steps up-until altitude is reached then it levels and holda altitude great. Same thing when descending, in steps.

any thoughts on how to adjust

Have you used the Dynon Autopilot Tuning Guide?

Post up your AP setting too, then we can see if there are things that are obvious that need changing or trying.

I have posted settings in previous posts that work well on RV10 and similar applications. Do a search.

The pitch response on the autopilot is, in my experience, nothing short of excellent on both an RV9A and a Cessna 172. Please post what your aircraft type is and what your settings are, we'll try to help.

Here are my current servo pitch settings installed in rv9a. Really appreciate your comments and recommendations.

My suggestions

Roll Servo, set the turn rate to 0......yes ZERO ;-)
Bank angle, up to you, but 25 is all you need unless you prefer more.

Pitch........been a while since I have done any D series setups, so here is some things to try.

Sensitivity.....run this up a bit say 14 or so.
Pitch Gain......maybe a bit there too, say 24
Pull Rate say 12-13
G Error gain maybe 11 or 12
G Error Limit....run this up a bit, I cant recall now but maybe 30.

Consult the manual for descriptions and guidance. Some good material there.

David you may know this - are the AP function values the same between the Skyview/D10? I'll be happy to share my values, but on the HDX it may not mean much.

I am not sure about the values being the same but I would like to try yours. Thanks.

Yeah......kinda....

The functions are the same but not all the values and ranges are the same from memory. The Skyview values for some things are in a scale of 1/10th the D series.

And the software underneath has not changed in a very long time with the D series, where there are many revisions in the Skyview/HDX.

Appears values were good. No step up. it was fairly bumpy and it climbed and descended smooth. Thanks for your help.
