I purchased a Dynon pitot boom and built a reciever into the leading edge of the wing on my experimental Champ. The boom is greater than 12" long. I would like to shorten it. Any advice on this? How far does it need to extend to be effective?

The farther out the better, usually. It all depends on the airflow around the airfoil, though, and so we don't have a lower limit on how far in will work.

We don't really recommend chopping the pitot - it isn't really designed to be easily modified (though people have hacked away at it successfully. I think there are some discussions on this forum if you search a bit).

Thanks. I appreciate your insight. Interesting choice of terms: chopping and hacked away at it. I'd have prefered "amputate" but I got your aversion to shortening the boom.
