I'm helping friends build an RV-8 and they're buying a Gamin 430, the D100 EFIS, the D120 EMS, and the HS34 HSI module.

We're wondering if the HSI with glideslope can be displayed on a portion of the D120 while the D120 is still displaying a condensed version of the engine graphics, while at the same time the D100 is still displaying the full EFIS screen, and if so... which side (left or right) of the D120 will the HSI show up upon?

Here's how they'd like to see the screens:

D100 mounted on left upper side of the RV-8 panel, the D120 on the right upper side of the panel, with the HS34 mounted exactly in between them to keep the panel looking symmetrical for aesthetics. (The Garmin 430 is in the bottom center of the panel). My friends would like to see the HSI displayed on the left half of the D120's screen, with the engine graphics on the right half of the D120's screen and the D100 still displaying the full usual EFIS screen. Is is possible to get the displays configured to work this way?

EDIT: I just noticed in the D120 user manual, that the HSI display on the D120 is stated to be only shown on the right side of the EMS screen as an option, but the manual's version date is October 2006 and that's pretty old and there's been discussion that a new firmware for the HSI feature is now released... any possibility of showing the HSI display on the left third of the screen with this new firmware? Else, I guess we'll put the D120 on the left side of the panel and the D100 on the right side, in order to get the HSI showing up roughly in the middle of the panel. in between the engine display and the EFIS display, and still have a fullscreen EFIS.

Re: Question 430, D100, D120 & HSI display

The next firmware release will allow the HSI to be put on the left side of the EMS. We hope to have this out within the month, so hopefully before you're flying.

The current firmware only allows the HSI on the right side of the EMS. Besides that, everything else you want to do can be done today.

This is most excellent news! The plane probably won't even be ready for first flight until late winter - early spring '08... hopefully over the autumn and winter months we'll get everything ready for that. The Dynons, Garmin 430 and transponder are going to be ordered very soon (next couple weeks probably) so I'll have them in plenty of time to assemble and wire the panel along with all the other avionics and general electrical system stuff (I'm the computer and electronics guy at our local airport and I usually end up wiring everyone's planes). We just got the Digitrak autopilot in already. It was the first item ordered.

And we can always update the firmware at any point along the line.

Thanks!
Neal
