Remote compass distance

How close to the D180 can the remote compass be located? How far away from a magneto? How far from a standard magnetic compass? I am considering putting the remote compass behind the instrument panel since there is a huge amount of room to do so in a Glasair IIS. Leading the wiring all the way to the aft eppenage will not be simple. It can be done but will not be simple.

Additionally, do the serial connections daisy chain to all the componenets (which seems serial in nature) or do the wires all come at common points? I am just planning the wiring now and trying to make it work better for the actual installation. It would seem the serial connection would daisy chain but if one component dropped out wouldn't the whole serial network come down?

The best way to find out for sure is to test, but, 1-2 feet from the mag compass should be OK, and more than 2 from the magneto.

The RS232 serial connections used to update the product (the 9 pin connectors) all need to have their own plugs to update individually. But, the DSAB connections (which in Dynon-speak we don't call serial connections so that they aren't confused with the serial ports used for updates) are a multi-drop bus - meaning - they can be daisy chained, stared, anything you like, just as long as all DSAB A wires are electrically connected and all DSAB B wires are electrically connected.

Thanks Dynon. I think I can meet both of those distances without issue. How far from the D180 or D100 must the remote compass be? I should have said DSAB when I said serial. Just to clarify, it is the DSAB which connects from D180 to 396 to Garmin 480 to GTX 327 etc correct?

If the D100 or D180 was on a plastic table in the middle of a field, the remote compass could be glued to the top of the D100 and it would work fine.

The interference doesn't come from the D100/D180, it comes from all the other stuff in your panel. Radios, transponders, battery cables, turn coordinators, circuit breaker busses, etc. Anything that draws power or has steel in it will mess with the compass to some level. This is the real reason we ask for it to be away from the panel, since the panel is the densest concentration of error producing stuff in a panel.

As mentioned, DSAB is only for Dynon-Dynon connections. Connections to other stuff is serial.

I've got mine located in my tail cone about 8" away from my primary COMM antenna. Haven't had a single problem.
