Remote tuning software update coming for GTN-650

I just saw this when reading about the software updates to the Garmin G3X. I have been wanting to control my GTN-650 from the SkyView, and was initially surprised this was not supported. It appears it will be possible in the future:

Please note a GTN, GTR 225 or GNC 255 software update will also be required and we anticipate those software updates will be available later this year. Additionally, this interface will require a bi-directional RS-232 interface between the unit being tuned and your G3X Touch display.

It is unlikely we'll be able to tune the Garmin radios remotely. The recent path of Garmin is to use encrypted interfaces between their certified equipment. We'll just have to wait for that firmware release and see if they publicly document the interface or not. As an owner of Garmin equipment you could contact them and voice your opinion that you would like this feature to work with more than just other Garmin gear.

Yes, I have written them before, and called, expressing my desire to have the remote tuning, especially since some of their radios can support it. After what you have said, I am not holding much hope.

FWIW -when my Gps fails or the IFR requirement for Tso 145/146 units date arrives here I am NOT buying Garmin. Call me pig headed but I refuse to pay the charges that Garmin have just to do upgrades or to 'look' at a unit.
