Screen froze during flight

I had my Skyview screen freeze up yesterday. Just barely got out of the pattern and it locked up. I landed and shut down. Rebooted and it seemed to be working fine, but I haven't flown again yet. I have on six 6 hours on my RV-9A and with regards to the Skyview, all trouble-free up to this point, so this is disturbing. Any way to diagnose why this happened?

One possibility, if maybe you had taken a screen capture shortly before the lockup...Turns out it'll do this if the USB stick is full (Dynon may have made an adjustment for this in the latest software update, not sure).

Funny enough I usually have the USB installed but this particular flight I had forgotten it. Seems to be completely random.

I completed an RV4 rebuild recently and installed the smaller skyview. Airplane has about 25 hrs on it now and yesterday the skyview froze after takeoff, cannot reboot and will not start up. All we can get on it now is a screen with verticle multi colored bars all the way across. No startup menu or info of any sort on the screen just very narrow colored verticle bars? Can anybody help?

I had a fault the same as you. Just contact Dynon, they will help get a replacement/repair. Dynon service is outstanding !

We're actually working on an engineering review of these issues right now. In general though, we'd encourage all IFR fliers to have appropriate backups in the aircraft such that any single failure does not impact the continuation of safe flight. (ie more than one set of instruments)

That is how the skyview system works- but my point is, hardware flaws (manufacturing) or software bugs, could take me down hard since that is shared across all of the components.

if i keep talking, dynon is going to tell me to get a D1 and some velcro

Actually, if you have two screens and two AHRS units, there are not a lot of failures that can take out everything.

With the 4.0 software, we have redundant data paths and redundant power paths from each screen to each module. So if one screen fails, the other screen has two ways to talk to two AHRS units. If an AHRS fails, you have two screens each with two ways to talk to the remaining AHRS.

Shared software may be an issue, but that can be mitigated by not using the latest software in IFR until it's been out for a few weeks and has thousands of users running it without issue.
