I have a D10A, and a Apollo GX-65. The manual that came with the D10A, has this proceedure:
"From the EFIS menu, enter SETUP >HSI >EFIS_SERIAL; ..... In that menu select the INPUT to be AVIATION and the BAUD RATE to be 9600."

I don't see an HSI option in the SETUP menu.

Page 3-5 of the D-10A manual indicates:

SETUP >GLOBAL >EMS SERIAL

Sounds like they just didn't update one of the references in the manual.

Yes, but that is for the EMS, not the EFIS. I don't have an EMS.

In your EFIS > SETUP menu, you should have an HSI option. If you don't, check your EFIS' firmware version in the SETUP > VRSION. It should be at the latest version (5.1.1).

It is version 4.2, but the manual I quoted came with it. I have been holding off upgrading the firmware until I finished testing it.

I take it version 4.2 didn't support GPS data on the serial line?

It does indeed. Once you're in the SETUP menu, you need to hit MORE a few times before you get to the HSI menu option.

I actually tried that, and still didn't see HSI. If you need to hit the MORE button several times, that should be in the manual ;)

Once you're in the EFIS SETUP menu, it should take 4 presses of the MORE button to scroll to the screen that has the HSI screen. If you're still not finding it, please give us a call at 425-402-0433 for some more personal help from tech support.

FYI - the MORE methodology is covered in the installation manual near the very beginning. It applies to any items that are not on the first page of any menu. For brevity, the manual doesn't repeat those instructions repeatedly:

"Menu Descriptions
Throughout this guide, the “>“ character is used to indicate entering a deeper level of the menu system. For example, “EFIS > SETUP > VRSION” indicates entering the EFIS menu, pressing MORE, then pressing SETUP, and then pressing VRSION to enter the firmware version menu. Note that the MORE button is not shown in the sequence, since pressing MORE reveals more options in the same level of the menu system."

Hmmm, How about this item, then?

1. Enter the inclination setup menu by pressing any button beneath an EFIS page (except the far left or far right hotkeys), then MORE > SETUP > MORE > MORE > MAGINC

Is there a menu "map" somewhere? I would run out and check it, but I live 45 minutes away from the airport. I am pretty sure I hit MORE until there were no more menus.

Touche! I guess I should've said "the manual doesn't always repeat those instructions". In any case, there isn't a complete map of the menus currently available.

But trust us, if you're at version 4.2, EFIS>SETUP>HSI is there. We promise. UNLESS, someone has locked down you unit (aircraft manufacturers can restrict settings access), in which case, there'll be a blank button there instead. But, that's an extremely, extremely rarely used feature. So rare I almost didn't mention it.

Re: Serial GPS setup. - Update

Update: I found the HSI screen, 4 "mores" into the setup menu. I set the EFIS_SERIAL to "Aviation, 9600 BAUD", but it still doesn't show a HSI, or update the EFIS clock. I also tried BAUD set to AUTO.

Can you suggest a way to be sure I am actually connected? Like maybe using the terminal program on a laptop?

While I was out there, I did the upgrade from 4.2 to 5.11
Just as the progress timer got to the end, my laptop got the "blue screen of death". The D10A went back to EFIS, and EFIS > SETUP > VRSION shows 5.11
Is there another way to tell if it really finished upgrading?

First off, you will never get the time being set, since AVIATION format doesn't include the time. Same issue with something like the 430.

You will only get an HSI if you have an active waypoint and the GPS has a lock. So make sure that is true first. If it does, and you still don't have anything, bring up the HSI menu and see if you have a "NAVSRC" button.

If it reads 5.1.1, it's upgraded. It's not like a PC were there are files inside and only some can get upgraded. It would just not boot if it were a partial load.

Another gotcha is that you won't get anything if you are in simulator mode with a Garmin unit. In an annoying but safety-conscious decision they turn off all outputs as soon as simulator mode is engaged.
