Skyview Classic doesn’t show sectional layer..

Hey everybody:

About three months ago, I went out to fly and found that my dual Skyview Classic screen on the right did not show a sectional depiction but instead showed an aviation map. I checked my left screen and it did have the sectional depiction. Thinking this was an issue from a recent down in January, I reformatted two USB’s and loaded my Seattle Avionics down loads into the Skyview panels. Now both screens only show the aviation map and neither screen shows sectional maps as an option in the map layers. The only options in map layers is WX and TERRAIN. I’ve tried plugging the USB directly into the back of each display with no luck. After contacting Seattle Avionics 4 times without any response, I thought I’d post here to see if anyone has an idea of what’s amiss. Dynon tech support hasn’t been able to determine the cause as of this writing…

Thanks in advance for help with this problem.

When did you do updates, and what was updated? Not sure about the Classic, but the HDX searches for approach plates, sectionals, and IFR charts under the Chartdata folder on the USB. Are they there?

I have updated the the Skyview displays for February and March with the same result. I do not update IFR only Airport Diagrams, Approach plates and VFR Sectionals. As the sectionals do not show up in the Map folder in Skyview, it seems to me that this is a software issue. Also, I replaced the the two USB sticks with new 32 Gig, (same as USB’s used when first encountering the issue) thinking there could be a possible problem with the original USB sticks. No luck in correcting the issue. I am running Skyview software version 16-2-4-US-Package-Classic. Below is a picture of the Map directory showing Terrain and WX only…

That's the base map. Again, I'm not sure about the Classic, but charts should be in the Chardata folder on the HDX, not the Maps folder. Assuming it's the same for the Classic, are the charts in that folder?

I think he means the MAP tab/button on the Skyview, not a folder on the stick. But yes, you're right...they should be in the folder Chartdata, and there should be an empty folder at root level called something like SkyViewUS, as well.

I've been using Seattle Avionics downloads for the past two years without a hitch. Below is the SA download screen. Both USB's have the directory for charts with sectional but it is no longer accessed by Skyview Classic...

Given all the troubles reported with SA ChartData, I think I'd physically check the folder for the presence of the files as opposed to relying on the Checkboxes on the download page. You may have already done that. In any case, I imagine Dynon would want that confirmed at some point. I seriously hope Dynon is investigating other update avenues than SA. I'm actually considering going with different avionics after reading about all the troubles with downloading and installing updates. It wouldn't be the first time I've changed my mind, but I've been pretty solidly settled on Dynon for quite some time up until now.

Below is a copy of the files on my USB drives. I’ve expanded the chart data to show that the sectional files are present. When I click on individual files they open with a small part of a chart. So it appears the downloaded charts are indeed on the USB but for some reason cannot be loaded into the Skyview screen…

Interesting. My chart download selections are different than yours of course, but there are no folders in my sectional "SEC" folder, just files. And you don't seem to have any files ending with "... chartdata.Dynon.key". Another interesting thing is I don't download the High Altitude IFR Charts, but there is an empty folder named "HI".

Problem solved! Turns out that one of my USB drives had a problem and this infected my information in Seattle Avionics. I uninstalled the Seattle Avionics download manager from my PC and then reinstalled it which removed any corrupted files residing within SA. I bought two new USB drives at Walmart which I assume they purchase from San Disk directly. Updated the SA data to the new USB’s and then plugged them into the Skyview Classic. Brought up the Map subdirectory and SEC showed up on the bottom menu item. Pressed to engage the SEC and the map changed to the sectional format. Thanks to the help of A&P John Melchert who walking me through this perplexing issue, I’m back in business! Hopefully this will help others down the road who may experience a similar problem.
