Skyview flashing then blows 5A fuse

Hi,

Has anyone ever seen this SV behaviour before?

D1000 display pulsing / flashing - See the video I uploaded to youtube, https://youtu.be/qtekFF9a28M

Background: EMS and EFIS installed and working fine. This unit has been installed in my homebuilt (which hasn't flown yet) for some years!

The SV unit remained responsive throughout; but at some point it blew the 5A protective fuse. Could this in any way be because the battery backup isn't fully charged so it's drawing too much current?

Best,
=bill

SkyView should not draw more than 5A even when charging.

Does it do the same thing when running off the backup battery only? Press Button #1 to start it up with no master power.

We did have this issue with RV-12s, and it was resolved with a firmware update. What version of firmware do you have installed on your SkyView system?

If it's reasonably current (such as at least v13.0.3), then you have reasonably current firmware, and this is likely a hardware issue. Please contact Dynon Avionics Technical Support for this issue - email support AT dynonavionics DOT com.

Hi,

thanks, I haven't updated for a while - I'm probably still on v12. I'll update it to v14 today.

The engine has never been started - and the battery, which has never been alternator-charged, is connected to what I'd call a 'trickle charger'. What I've noticed is the following
- Aircraft battery: approximately 11.8-12.0V when charged
- SV Backup Battery: very low, approx. 9.6V
- When I switch on the SV unit, I notice that the backup battery charging, (voltage increasing), and the aircraft battery is discharging
- I have witnessed the SV backup battery reaching approx 11V
- At some point (I haven't sat for over an hour to watch the process, yet) the SV unit blows the 5A fuse.
- On inspection after this, the aircraft battery is very low (<10V), status: Faulty/missing

My hypothesis is: The trickle charger is providing less power than the SV unit is consuming (EMS screen shows outflow of 2A or 3A depending on what is being displayed on screen; this won't account for the charging which is directly attached to the battery). Over time, and as the SV battery backup charges, the aircraft's voltage reduces to a point where the D1000 switches to battery backup. However, this is insufficient and some combination of switching between a/c and backup battery means that the SV is drawing down more than 5A.

So... despite the fact that the aircraft battery only seems to have the capacity to operate the SV unit (from fully charged) for a couple of hours there's a problem here which I'm keen to understand: why is the SV blowing this fuse?
It's a repeatable experiment. @Dynon, do you understand why this is happening?

All help/comments appreciated. Cheers,
=bill

Bill,
Any chance you have 10.0, 10.1, or 11.0? If so, there was a SW issue in these versions that blew fuses, but it only happened at very low input voltages like you describe.

I think you are correct. Skyview (and the rest of the system) is drawing more than the charger is outputting when you have the master on. VP-X shows a draw of 4-5A with just the master switch on when the SV battery is low. I switch my charger to 6A when I want to charge the Dynon backup battery after the annual battery test.
