SkyView Nav Radio

Talked to you folks at Oshkosh and was told that a Nav radio designed for SkyView has been in testing for over a year now.  After having just installed your dedicated Comm radio and ICS plus autopilot controllers (all outstanding products by the way) was wondering if you could provide a little bit of info on when the Nav radio may be up and running.  The Comm radio is such a leap forward with the SkyView that the Nav radio I would think will be a great addition.  Maybe a Sun and Fun announcement?  ;).  Thanks for a great product and great customer service, the best in the business.

I guess it would be nice, but since Skyview is not a certified navigator it can't be used to couple the autopilot onto an ILS received through that NAV radio, which (IMHO) is a major issue. With GPS nav there is really no longer a major need for VOR nav via the receiver and ILS becomes it's major use. If I can receive the ILS through Skyview and hand-fly the approach, or receive it through another box (especially one already in my panel) that is certified and couple it to the autopilot, I know which direction I'm going.

Now - having said that - if Skyview can get to a "certified navigation receiver" status, then that would indeed be a game-changer.

Right now we don't have anything further to share here. We do not currently have plans to introduce a NAV radio, though. As anything that we haven't announced but let slip in conversations at a show - products aren't real until they're announced.

Where is it stated that a nav receiver has to be certified to couple to an autopilot?

Dynon's autopilot will not couple to an ILS or GPS approach unless it comes from a certified receiver. It will certainly couple to a non-certified receiver for enroute horizontal guidance, but will not give vertical guidance which is required for an ILS/GPS approach. Vertical guidance coupled to the autopilot requires a certified receiver.  It will DISPLAY the guidance on the screen if it comes from a non-certified source, and you can handfly the approach, but it won't COUPLE to the autopilot without a certified nav source.

So, again, we don't have a product at this point, but unlike IFR GPSes, we don't see any evidence that there is any certification requirements for NAV radio receivers.

Talked to John (FAA Guy) at the East Michigan FSDO (formally the Detroit FSDO) who confirmed no TSO requirement for the NAV radio. Also if and when Dynon were to come out with a NAV receiver it should be able to couple to the SkyView autopilot if you have the servo's installed in your aircraft.  I almost pulled the trigger on a VAL 2000 but have decided to wait a bit longer on Dynon, at least till after Sun and Fun, and then maybe Oshkosh.  I like the fact (even though it is not "real" yet) it will most likely be controlled by the SkyView display and not take up any space with a control head on the panel.  Keep up the great work Dynon, you guys have produced products that exceed the 12 million dollar helicopter I fly during my day job.  In closing I know I am speculating here but hopefully this will become reality at some point.
