Skyview & VP-X Sport Not Communicating

Following steps 1-7 under '6.5 Configuring the Dynon Skyview' on pages 53 of the VP-X Installation Manual, I entered the VP-X license key into Skyview and configured port 1 with VP-X as the serial in device. TX counter is incrementing on the Skyview, but RX counter is not - it's zero. On the VP-X side, System Status screen shows no data is being received from the EFIS. Spent half the day checking and rechecking the wiring, but it doesn't appear to be a wiring problem - checked continuity on all 3 wires from end to end multiple times. Otherwise, Skyview and VP-X seem to be working correctly - so far.

Any suggestions on how to isolate/resolve the problem?

Did you hook RX to TX and TX to RX?

If you have more than one SkyView screen, is the VP-X wired to all of them?

On SkyView, you can short the SkyView TX to the SkyView RX to prove to yourself SkyView is talking out that port.

Yes, I verified the RX-TX and TX-RX connections were correct. Only 1 SV being installed.

Will shorting the TX and RX on the SV result in TX and RX counters both incrementing? And, do no harm?

Correct, connecting TX and RX will cause the RX counter to increase (well, it should) and will cause no harm. Serial ports can be shorted to one another, to ground, to and to 12V without permanent harm.

As recommended, shorted the RX and TX pins on the SV and verified that both counters were incrementing.  So, looks like the VP-X is the problem.

Tried shorting the RX and TX on the VP-X, but System Status on VP-X still shows 'External data not being received from EFIS' error message.  However, not sure how to test the serial port on the VP-X so will contact VP Support for their suggestion.

Thanks for helping me verify the SV is working correctly!

My bad. Turns out that I had it pinned correctly, but to the wrong connector - J2 instead of J1 as documented. Feeling really stupid about now :-[

Good news is that VP-X and Skyview are communicating very nicely now.

Thanks to Dynon and VP Support teams for the help!

Good to get the feedback, thanks  ;) We ALL make mistakes sometimes & it's easily done too  :)

Having done the same thing once I now always use a permanent marker to identify each connector, especially the J1 & J2 on audio panels as they both use pins  ;)
