Hello Support

I'm in the process of upgrading the GPS in my RV-4 and wanna if a remote annunciator is required to display the annunciations from a GNS 400 or will the Skyview displayed the info like VNAV/LNAV etc... if used in conjuntion with an Aring 429...

Thanks

Although I am guessing ( sorry) but i think the requirement for remote annunciators has pretty much disappeared. I had one in my previous experimental with a King 89b install.
The next garmin 430 install was done without one.
My current GTN 750 I think is in my legal scan with its big screen. a remote annunciator would be a distraction, and was a government imposed redundancy.

The answer is in the install manual for the Garmin 4XX. A diagram shows the maximum allowable distances from the Garmin to a point on the instrument panel directly in front of the pilot. If the radio is close enough to that point, then the built-in annunciators are good enough. Otherwise, remote annunciation is required.

Hi Gents

Thanks for the reply..

Tom, I've read the installation manual for a WAAS installation and in there it stipulate that the GNS or any other GPS has to be within 11.5 Inches from the corner of the unit to be used without an annunciator and mine will be install in a center top console in my RV-4 so I've got some measuring to do I guess..

What I really like to know is,....Will the Skyview displayed the annunciations from the GNS 400 on its screen if hooked up via an Aring 429 and a serial connection???

Maybe I will get a reply from Support tomorrow, they should know for sure..

Thanks again

The answer will be interesting because my Skyview, 430W, ARINC-429 installation does not.

Hi Tom

''my Skyview, 430W, ARINC-429 installation does not.

Well that is good to know... I was thinking of replacing a KLN-90B with a GNS 400 or 430 and get rid of the annunciator due to lack of room in the panel, now I'm not really sure what I'm gonna do....

The other EFIS ( grt etc... )seem to be able to display the info, I'm surprised the Skyview can't...maybe with a new update we might get lucky...

Cheers

Bruno,

Some questions first:

1.  I assume you are talking about the rules for US IFR operation, right?  Because, I don't know them for other countries.

2.  Do you have a mechanical VOR/ILS indicator?  Because, the Garmin indicator, together with the 430 display, provide all the US required annunciation, as long as you meet the distance requirement.  This is what I have installed.

3.  If you don't have the separate indicator, then I understand your need.  The annunciations from the indicator, that you don't have, are GPS, LOC, NAV lights.  The first two are active low "contact" inputs in Dynon terms and they come out of the 430 as discrete wires.  The NAV light is to indicate that a separate VOR/ILS source is feeding that indicator.  Such as the King 155 that I have  You could define Dynon screen widgets and display them, but, I THINK that is limited to the EMS page.  Is that right Support?

To answer the SkyView question - SkyView does not have individual annunciators for each of the required GNS/GTN annunciations (message/waypoint etc). As others have mentioned, if the Garmin device is within a reasonable angle of the pilots FOV, the device itself is the annunciator.

Hello Tom/Support

Well looks like I'm gonna need an annunciator regarless of which GPS I used.....too bad

It would have been nice to have the annunciations ( App arm, active etc...)displayed on the Skyview and being able to get rid of the annunciator....

     Maybe some other time..

  Thanks

Bruno,

Since your GPS box would be close enough to be legal, what are you missing without remote annunciation? I don't have remote annunciation and everything is fine without it.

Hi Tom

I guess it is more of a legal point ( IFR Regs ) than being able to see the Display.

The annunciator allows me to select for example ...OBS, Legs...etc....see if the approach is armed or active...that sort of things which would have been nice to see on the Skyview display and also to have one less box to install as I'm running out of room in my RV-4...

Cheers
