Are there any updates to this discussion?
1) does Skyview share flight plan inputs with Garmin GTN650?
2) does Skyview with GPS2020 enable any IFR uses?
3) do I still need Seattle Av plus Jeppesen updates for IFR?
I have been flying the SkyView fed from a GTN-650 (via the SkyView ARINC module) for over four years. Here are your answers:
1) Yes - the GTN-650 feeds the SkyView for flight planes, approaches and such. The SkyView is a far superior display of the GTN-650 information than the GTN-650 display.
3) No - the GPS2020 is not a certified GPS IFR navigator (it should be - but Dynon is not going down that road - or at least not telling us they are). The GPS2020 is however ADS-B out compliant. So if you only fly VFR you need not buy a WAAS GPS IFR navigator (like the GTN-650).
3) Yes and No. The Seattle SkyView chart updates are nice as you always have updated sectional and IFR charts, as well as all the approach plates. If you have other means to do this (e.g. Foreflight) then you don't need a Seattle Avionics subscription. Dynon provides updated Nav/obstacle and terrain updates for the SkyView moving map. THIS DOES NOT replace the requirement to have the GTN-650 Nav database up to date if you fly IFR. It does eliminate the need to pay for the GTN-650 Terrain and obstacle databases. So, you are still stuck with the ~$450 Jeppenson database subscription for the GTN-650. NOTE - Garmin has recently dropped the prices on this if you buy from them, and Jeppenson will match the Garmin lower price if you ask.
