What exactly is meant by "Ensure there is a shared ground between the Skyview and the SL40" in the installation instructions? (BTW, there's a type on p. 4-17...it says "transponder" but probably should be "SL40").

I don't know about the shared ground or the typo if looking at Revision Q of the POH but ...
I seem to have it in my head that the SL-40 can be seen by Skyview on the top bar. Is this true?
Can some kind person point me in the right direction for configuring it if so? :)
Thanks

OK  yesterday I did it - I added the one missing wire (I originally figured I'd have to add three for Rx, Tx, Serial Ground + grounding the shield.

I do not understand why Vans had Steinair set up the harness the way they did - with two wires present and one missing.  Pulling the radio and the rack is a real PITA.

I set up Serial Port 4 - it was easy using Dynon's device selector - just hit SL-40 and it configured the port automatically.

And - VOILA! It all worked perfectly - pushing and pulling the freqs between the SV and the radio.  Really, really slick!!!!!!

Now - during ops to an airport, I can just call up the Info page and select and Tune by pushing buttons - Approach - Tower - Ground -- and not using charts, guides, or the Index cards I have been using.  Plus - the SV tells me what the freq is that I have tuned or is in Standby - instead of me wondering and trying to reverse engineer the freq back to a function or airport.

This is a HUGE improvement to the flow, and makes the Skyview even slicker - thanks guys!

Under "GARMIN SL-40 COM RADIO" the 3rd bullet - I think the word Transponder should read Radio

"[ch61623] Ensure there is a shared ground between the SkyView display, and the transponder."

Yes, I read that section, thank you.

I *assume* I should connect one of the ground wires from the SV to the SL40 serial ground pin, but wanted to make sure that's what they meant first.

You are correct on the grounding, and oops you did mention the transponder/radio error.  :-[

Hi, I'm having a problem with my Skyview and The SL-40 radio. I have it all hooked up and no sound. Here is how my wires go. From the SL-40 pins 3 and 10 goes to Skyview Serial ports 7 and 8 and the 3 pin goes to the Serial 3 RX, 10 pin to TX. From the PM-3000 Pin 17 goes to pins 13, 30 and 31 on the Skyview. The SL-40 power wire goes to a 5 AMP breaker and the ground goes to aircraft ground. The PM-3000 power wire Goes to a 1 AMP breaker and the ground wire goes to the aircraft ground.
It has been mentioned that one ground wire must go to the Skyview ground. Could someone tell me where I have the wires wrong and how to fix it.
Thanks for any help, Elmer

Elmer:

Apologies, but to be clear, you're not hearing any audio from the SkyView display? If I have that correctly...

Without looking at the PM-3000 manual, I assume Pin 17 is an audio input. If so, you would connect SkyView Pins 13 and 31 to PM-3000 Pin 17. SkyView Pin 30 is a ground, if that was also connected to PM-3000 Pin 17, you were shorting out the SkyView audio output to ground. SkyView Pin 30 should be connected to an audio ground on the PM-3000.

Oops - apologies! Noted for correction in the manual ASAP. Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

Hi, I'll see if I can explain the ground. It's wired with PM3000 pin 17 going to Skyview 13 and 31. Pin 30 is a wrap around the wire 17. Now should I cut the Skyview wire 30 and take the PM3000 pin 1 wire and move it to the Skyview 30 pin ground or do I need to have 2 grounds on the PM3000, one to aircaft ground and one to Skyview ground?
No I don't have any sound at all.
Should I also take a 16 AWG wire and mount it to all 3 cases. But not to any wires?
Thanks for the help.

Hmmmm...all of my ground wires from the SV connector itself are taken up, and I'd rather not splice into one if I can avoid it. Is it ok to ground from the SL40 to the ground buss to which the SV is grounded?

Hi Elmer,

Your wiring is correct. Even if the grounds weren't perfect, you should be getting audio. Can you go into SkyView's SETUP > SYSTEM SETUP > AUDIO SETUP > VOLUME CONTROL/TEST menu and try turning the volume all the way up?
