I don't know much about spins, but a discussion with another Skyview pilot brought up the fact that he thought the autopilot would get you out of a spin, I was not sure. How about it, will the autopilot be of any value in an unintentional spin?

Well, it doesn't have rudder control, so.....

You could always try it and see, just be prepared to disconnect it and recover using standard spin recovery techniques.

Do NOT recommend trying it.

Remember SV doesn't have rudder control nor throttle control. Trying to recover from a spin with just aileron and elevator is not something I would recommend nor do I know of a plane that has spin recovery procedures that doesn't include rudder/throttle. (Not that I know all planes, etc. I didn't even stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night)

For those folks trained in aerobatics, why would you want to let the Auto Pilot recover when you can do it much faster/safer.

For those folks NOT trained in aerobatics, why would you want to "test" it and why would you want to try to recover in a non-standard/non-recommended way.

Maybe there is confusion between a spiral and a spin. Likely the autopilot would handle the spiral assuming the airspeed was below Vne. A big difference between the two is falling vs. flying.

Spins: don't even think about it. Different types have different recoveries and some won't recover from a fully developed spin at all. Rudder is needed in all cases as is throttle.

I agree. Don't even think of using the Autopilot for recovery from Spins OR Spiral.

I suggest you buy the excellent book all about spins by Rich Stowell called P A R E.

P - Power
A- Ailerons
R- Rudder
E- Elevator

Many aerobatic airplanes will recover with a "hands off" technique. Power Off, Hands Off, Opposite Rudder.

However this will not work in all aircraft. Rich explains this very well.

Please go and get spin instruction if you have not done them.

I should have stated we were talking ONLY the Vans RV12, in which intentional spins are prohibited. No clue how to get it out of one if unintentionally one started.

Phil just told you

Power OFF
Ailerons NEUTRAL
Rudder OPPOSITE the direction of the spin
Elevator BRISKLY FORWARD

then fly out of it.
