It seems like every time I go to download data or otherwise connect my computer to the 100 series instruments I run into some sort of driver or port issue that makes it all a big hassle. In this age of super-cheap mini computers like the Raspberry Pi or Arduino, I've started wondering how hard it would be to create a stand-alone box with a serial cable coming out of one end, a micro SD card slot on one end, and a red push button labeled "download." I suppose it could get fancy and have some status LEDs or maybe a little LCD screen to let us know when it is connected and ready, and when it is done.

It seems like the biggest hurdle for this would be getting the folks at Dynon to let us know how their Windows program talks to the instrument when it connects to download data... how proprietary is that process? And how willing would you be to talk about that, here or directly?

For a variety of reasons - including the fact that the support program was first written over a decade ago - we wouldn't be able to support the connectivity that you describe. One thing in the same vein that you could look into, though, is consuming the serial streaming data in realtime and record that. It doesn't have exactly the same data as what is in the internal logs, but there is substantial overlap. Others here have done projects on this before, so search the forum here too.
