Strange HS34 happenings

All has been fine with my D100/HS34 running on 5.1.1 software until today.  They are tied into an SL-30 and GX-65, all of which have worked perfectly.

For some reason the following occurred with no other system changes or maintenance on my part:

1.  Cannot adjust  barometer setting or set altitude bug with the HS 34 but can set both directly with the D100 buttons.

2.  Nav source is stuck on the magenta GPS light and will not allow me to select the green Nav light  anymore.

3.  The bearing source will not cycle through the various options.

4.  The heading bug works fine via the HS34 and toggles off and on as it should.

5.  The course knob does nothing because I cannot select the green Nav D-bar on the HSI.  This used to work as advertised

Checked into the troubleshooting section of the D100 manual with no luck.  It is as though part of the HS 34 has quit functioning but the heading bug portion works.

Any ideas?

Well, today I played with it again and at first it was just like I reported. But after a few minutes I found that I could set the baro with the data knob on the HS-34 but not the altitude bug. I could also select the green Nav d-bar on the HSI and select the bearing source. The course knob slewed the green course d-bar on the HSI, unlike yesterday when this function did not work.

Before I shut it down, I found that I could no longer set the baro with the HS 34 either, even though that had worked a few minutes earlier!

Dynon, ever heard of this? The HS-34 is intermittent. Does any of the above indicate that one of the DSAB wires is occasionally open circuited, should I reload 5.1.1 into the HS-34 or is there a problem in the hardware in the HS34 box? This is really disconcerting for a system flown IFR.

You're the first to report this issue. When you're seeing your issues, what does SETUP>DSAB>DSAB STATUS show for the HS34 status? Beyond that, call/email tech support at 425-402-0433 or support at dynonavionics.com to troubleshoot this issue further.

In talking with the company, it turns out that a series of HS-34 boxes had poor solder connections on some of the pins.  Mine was apparently one of them.  The intermittent problem I have experienced is the symptom to watch for.

Dynon shipped me a replacement HS-34 second day air at no cost to me and issued an RMA number for my old box.  Will swap them tomorrow and expect it to be ops normal for me.

Good show, Dynon!  That's why I have bought your equipment in the past and am about ready to order again for another plane we are building.

Bingo!  That did it.  The new HS-34 solved all of the intermittent problems.  The failure mode was in some defective solder joints that have worked fine for about two years and 300 hours.  If your HS-34 starts acting strange and is intermittent, call Dynon with the serial number.  That is quite likely your problem.
