SV-COM-760 without SV-INTERCOM-2S…?

I’m installing a SV-COM-760 and a SV-COM-PANEL in my 2 seat homebuilt project (a Zenith 750).

Question: Do I need an SV-INTERCOM-2S in order to talk to my passenger…?

I’ve been looking at the documentation and I’m confused in this area (the documentation mainly focuses on the T8/T25 plus the intercom). Is there a wiring diagram specifically for the SV-COM-760…?

Thanks,

- Pat

Unless you plan to yell very loudly, you need an intercom to speak with your passenger. It doesn't have to be the SV-INTERCOM-2S though. You can use a different type if you want, even a portable one.

If limited to only one, I would personally install an SV-INTERCOM-2S rather than an SV-COM-PANEL. You don't actually 'need' an SV-COM-PANEL, but you need an intercom. You also won't hear audio alerts from the Skyview without an intercom or an audio panel, unless you craft a custom mixer.

Wiring diagrams for the 760 are in the SV-INTERCOM-2S Installation Guide and Skyview Installation Guide. The pinouts are the same as for the T25/T8, so you don't need a separate diagram.

You're better off buying a Trig TY91. Takes up less space in the panel, has a built intercom, exactly the same performance as the Dynon radio (which is made by Trig anyway) and can hook in nicely to an HDX etc for almost every function the Dynon radio has.

It would be great if Dynon incorporated the intercom into their radio but, all the while they don't, for those looking to save space in their panel, save some money and get the same radio, you're better off with the Trig.

Well, if I need it I need it. I already bought the SV-COM-760 and the SV-COM-PANEL, and have them mounted in my panel…

I built another airplane 20 years ago, and the intercom was built into the radio. It never occurred to me that a brand new radio in the year 2024 would not have that (especially a Dynon).

Even if the SV-COM-760 is obsolete it’s still going to be worthwhile in the end. And the intercom does have additional functionality, so that’s a plus. All things considered, the entire radio package in total is still superior to what I installed 20 years ago.

That's why I prefaced it by saying what I would personally do. It's your plane. You get to do what you want. Pretty much anything you install in an aircraft has some sort of tradeoff, so you decide where the true value lies to you.

Most aircraft radios do not have built in intercoms. They assume you'll install your own. But, back to the original question, you need an intercom (or audio panel) to talk to someone else in the plane. That can be as simple as a battery powered, voice activated portable intercom you rest between the seats, so it doesn't take up panel space.

If you also want alert audio from the Skyview, you can use a mixer to accomplish that, and it doesn't take up panel space either. You can search for "mixer" here to see places where that's been discussed before. If you don't want alert audio from the Skyview, you're fine.
