Is there any way to define what you want displayed on the various ranges?

Is there any way to use an obs function for vectors to final?

Yes. Under SETUP MENU > MAP SETUP you can customize the max range that a type of aviation data (airports, vors, etc) will be displayed.

If you're given vectors to final, you can simply use the heading bug to give the AP the target direction to fly per ATC. But maybe I'm missing what you mean.

I understand that I can use the heading bug, and will use it even if the obs mode for the map is available.

however there are numerous times when it is hazy or you are in an unfamiliar area that it is very useful to have a map line extended from final so you can set up on final without an approach set up.

I understand that if the database has final approach fix I can set that up in the flight plan, but it is much simpler to just have the obs to set up on final.

the gns430 has an obs function, but we shouldn't have to use a gns430 should we? ;)  besides, it does not display on the sv-map.

the obs mode adds to situational awareness in vfr conditions, especially in marginal vfr conditions.
