I have owned this aircraft with a Dynon SkyView classic display (SV-D1000) for two years now. Every once in a while, it would lock up during bootup.. Usually during map dataloading You could tell, because the clock would stop running and the alarms would stop blinking. Nothing would recover from that except a key 1,2, 5 reboot. It only happend once every couple of months or so, and If I made it through map data loading.... everything was fine. And I have steam gauge backups, an I pad with a Seattle Avionics merlin dual band ADS b receiver and ADHARS.... so I lived with it.

Until today.

I went to install Version 16.2. of the Software, and all was going well,, until the system apparently hung up during "Netwark Update Status (updating SV-ADAHRS-200:004821)"... Things stopped when the update bar reached 99% during one of the reboots after initial software loading. After 15 minutes, I tried pressing the 78 key combo. Nothing. the only key combination that worked was... 1, 2, 5.. This time it hung up 48% of the way through "Staging SV-EMS-220:003557". I pulled out the USB stick, (to change a variable) and did a THIRD reboot, made it through loading map databases. I pulled up the boot console display, and saw (in pertinent part) "
"STARTING NETWORK MANAGER...
Failed to get version (attempt 3/10), resetting USB.
Failed to get version (attempt 4/10), resetting USB.
Could not initialize RT10IO UART port!"

And then the display locked up again

Then I plugged the USB stick back in again., and rebooted the system again. It made it through boot again, and froze about a minute after map load was complete.
I booted the system again, and note that the Version shown on the second line is "16.2.4.8600." The line that says "STARTING NEWWORK MANAGER... " Is followed by the IP address, not failure warnings. YAY!

Except. Every attempt to start the system up results in the system locking up either during the boot process or within 1 minute afterward ...

Well, now I'm kind of wishing I hadn't tried to update my software today, because I HAD planned to fly today. CAN'T now.

Any thoughts?? Besides... shoulda not lived with the occasional glitch in startup for two years, that is?

Tried rebooting system with backup battery disconnected. Still hangs up every time.... eventually... sometimes almost immediately partway through booting, sometimes after a couple of minutes...

And found out a new wrinkle today. If I leave it frozen/hung up for several minutes... it reboots!

Unless someone has an idea, I'm thinking it's back to the factory for this display... AND i seem to remember that they have a parts shortage and long delay in repairing things. Well, hopefully my memory is, well, not bad (who wants that?), but .. outdated.

Your best bet is to call Dynon tech support and discuss the issue. If they cannot get the system repaired over the phone, they can issue an RMA number so you can send it in for repair. You could then ask what to expect regarding repair times, etc.

I'm glad to hear you agree with me, .... because I DID contact Dynon customer support yesterday with my sad story, to which the reply was (in pertinent part), "Allen, Probably time to cut to the chase and let us take a look at that one. Sounds like it is getting some serious hardware heartburn. I need to verify some information for a RMA for it's return...."

You didn't mention how old your Skyview Classic is, so I would also request a thorough check of all operations after repairs. Since I don't think you originally installed the system, who knows what has happened over its lifetime?

I did send in that request for a through check, and received the following reply from Dynon Tech Support:

"All of our products are run through extensive testing after the repair process has been completed. This testing at times lasts multiple days, and simulates extreme operating conditions and scenarios that you likely would never get close to being in while flying. This is done to ensure that the product will work well not only during normal operations, but in adverse conditions as well. . . . While it is always good to do a thorough checkout once you get the product back, which can clear up any other potential installation related issues, you have our word that we will return your unit in good working order after thorough testing. In all cases, our products return from repair in a "like new" condition both in terms of hardware repair and operational testing."
