Tach Install w/ Resistors

Was wondering what others have done when installing the rq'd resistors for the tach leads on a Lyc. My understanding is that the resistors are to come right off of the mag terminals at the ign switch. They are pretty delicate. Anyone come up with some great method?

also, has the stated 30K been enough for the Lyc 0360? Thanks, Craig

Craig,

Here is what worked fine for me with a Lyc IO-360. Solder or butt splice a very short piece of stranded mil wire to one end of the resistor. Solder or butt splice the other end of the resistor to the DB37 wire. Put a length of shrink wrap over the whole resistor assembly, put a ring terminal on the short length of wire and connect it to the ignition switch terminal. The original resistor value worked perfectly and the supplied Lyc IO 4-cyl engine definition file worked out of the box.

Some people prefer to hook up at the mag instead of in the cockpit at the switch. Either works.

The 30K seems to be fine on 4 cylinder lycomings, it's some of the 6 cyls that seem to need a different setup at times.

I connected to the toggle switches for the mags, but I butt spliced wires directly to the resistors and crimped a ring terminal on the other end. I shrink wrapped the whole thing to insulate it. The ring terminal was then connected to the same lead on the toggle switch as the p-lead from the mag. White wires with shrink wrap in the picture. You can see a bit of a bulge for the resistor.

The resistors weren't in the box so I bought some 33K from a local shop.

Works as advertised.
