The SOP at my home airport is to make a telephone call to get a Transponder code, as the tower will not normally issue these codes. Consequently, I power up my SV Classic on internal battery, then make the phone call to get the code, then enter it using the buttons on the SV.
Unfortunately, the SV does not display the code when being entered with the transponder off. It takes the code, but there is no way to verify the entry until much later in the startup procedure when all of the avionics are running, after engine start.
I may have suggested this earlier, but simply having a pop-up window during code entry would solve this, or display it in the status bar with a different color when the transponder is not powered on.
