I'm not sure how the EFIS unit is wired internally so I don't know if this is possible with existing units or not. Would it be possible to use one of the unsed outputs as a standby/flight switch for a transponder (grounded if 'on ground'). The way I see it working would be to ground below a certain speed (say 30kts).

There is no output that can be configured to act as a transponder trigger.

I don't know what transponder you have but the GTX330 (fast becomming the default transponder) has 2 ways that can be used to switch to "ALT" and one way to switch to "GRND", even without a WOW (Weight On Wheels), Squat Switch (same thing as WOW), or Air Hobbs Switch.

"ALT" will trigger with either GPS GS over a pre-set level (say 40KTS) or a 200ft increase in encoder altitude over the power on level. "GRND" will only trigger with GPS GS under the pre-set level.

It's a Filser TRT 800A. Although it can accept an import from a GPS it doesn't have the features you describe.
