UK/European maps

Gentlemen,

I'm trying to decide what to fit in my 914 powered Europa. As far as I can tell the Skyview EMS can cope with a return fuel sensor (excellent!) but the D180 cannot.
The synthetic vision features and mapping of the Skyview look brilliant but I suspect the data may not be available in Europe &, as I understand it, the Jepperson data does not include all the smaller strips that are the majority of destintations that I fly to.
I havent seen anything first-hand so I'm inferring the limitations and of course I may have misunderstood- is it possible to post some screenshots of what is currently available by way of terrain & mapping for the UK?

Thanks,

Bill

SkyView can accept two fuel flow senders, and calculate the difference so you get an accurate reading of the actual fuel use.  The D180 cannot do this directly, but there is a product on the market (from Matronics) that will total the flows from two senders and send just the net to the D180. But it is expensive.

The SkyView European data will be coming soon, in March.  The Jepp data is the same as what you will see on other products that use their data. We're not sure how detailed that is in the UK.  We'll try to post some photos.

The terrain data is identical to the terrain data in North American, 3 arc seconds (300 feet.)  This is the highest resolution available.

The present European terrain data is quite unsatisfactory, and I hope it will be updated when the Nav programme comes along. When I am on the runway at my local airfield in Ireland (EINC) the Skyview picture shows that I am in the sea! My Garmin 695, on the other hand, shows my position perfectly correctly. Will this kind of mapping error be corrected?

Go figure eh!. I hope you have floats. It'll be interesting to see if the runway is placed over the water when the NAV data is available.

The same is true for some of the NA data. In the following youtube video (starting at 1:04) you can see that the river doesn't match the SV screen.

We recognize that the water boundaries aren't perfect everywhere, and hope to take a look at it at some point, but don't have a firm timeframe for when we might take a fresh crack at it. Realize that there's an enormous volume of data here, with data from multiple public domain sources being fused together to bring you cost-free terrain data.

One thing that we've noticed is that some of the areas which are reported as water are actually flood plains - ie, places that have been covered at some point, or have some expectation of being flooded say once in a hundred years.

Also note that many of the areas that are showing erroneous water are within a very short distance of actual water.

Runways show up in their correct GPS locations, period. They're not tied to the terrain database in any way.

Thank you for that. It is important to know that when we get runway data it will be accurate. The exact location of the shoreline does not matter that much. What is more of a worry is the thought that mountains displayed on the SV or the Map may be inaccurate as well. Do you think we can be assured that mountain peaks and profiles are accurate? If not the whole concept of the map display and Synthetic Visibility is really worthess.

I don't agree that the terrain data is useless if it's not exact. Keep in mind that the accuracy is 300 feet. If I have to fly that close to terrain I would be using VFR.

phantom water over land yes a little annoying
did a short 250 km trip most of which was 30 nm inland
Crossed over two small lakes but you would have thought the total land mass was almost covered in water
