Mike at Dynon support, thanks for the help. The D180 upgrade went 99% and then gave a message that the connection was lost. Restarting the update gave File Not Found errors. It was necessary to disconnect the internal battery and start the upgrade from scratch, then it worked fine. Also the upgrade to the D100 and HS34 went without a hitch.
