HI,

Tried today to update the EMS-D120 firmware using the support software but with no luck. As soon as i try and retrieve the firmware from the EMS, the screen on the EMS turns yellow and says "Loading...". The pc then reports that it cannot find any instruments connected to the comm port. However, if i do the same for the EFIS unit, everything works fine and i can retrieve the firmware. I disconnected the EMS plug and tested the cables on pin 11 & 12 (if i remmeber correctly) and they test fine to the DB9 plug on the PC.

One thing i did notice is that the GND wire on the EFIS and EMS plugs are on different pins (pin 1 and pin 9) on the DB9 connectors. I doubt this would make a difference as the RX and TX are the same.

Any ideas?

Thanks

The pin-outs that you specify for the 9 pin connectors don't quite add up. On the PC serial harness for both the EFIS and the EMS, the 9 pin serial connectors should have pins in holes 2, 3, and 5. On the EFIS 25 pin end, these should connect to pins 10, 22, and 9 respectively. On the EMS 37 pin end, they should map to pins 11, 12, and 30 respectively. The only place that pin 1 is a ground on a DB9 is on the EFIS remote compass connector.

I'd make sure that on the EMS harness, your DB9 connector has pins 2, 3, 5 connected to 11, 12, 30 on the DB37.

FYI:

The EFIS DB-9 connector was using pins 2,3 and 5. The EMS DB-9 connector was using pins 2,3 and 9, which was wrong. Changed the EMS DB-9 connector to use pin 5 instead of pin 9 and whoala. Problem solved. Somehow the ground wire was needed to establish the correct two-way communication.

These plugs and their wiring was apparently suplied by Dynon. I will take this up with the installer to clarify why they were different.

Thanks for the help.
