This is primarily for the Dynon tech support staff, unless someone else knows the answer.

I am putting backup gauges (voltage, amperage, oil temp, oil press, tach) in the Smith Super Cub I am building.   I already have a EMS D10 and have already put the backup instruments in the panel.  I just want the analog readings as well as the Dynon.   Please tell me which instruments can be used with the same sensors and which have to have seperate ones.   Are there any instruments I can just use a parallel input with a seperate wire?  The analog gauges are all UMA.

I can be contacted at 903-335-3021 during the day, should a telecon be the best way for the

Thanks,
Herzog

Re: Use of backup gauges with same sensorsor ll in

When you bought your EMS-D10, did you also purchase sensors from us? The third-party sensors that we do support are listed in tables for each measurement type in the EMS-D10 Installation Guide (starting at page 4-10). We do not explicitly support any UMA sensors at this time.

At any rate, any resistive sensor (any sensor which changes resistance with pressure, temperature, fuel level, etc) will definitely not work correctly when connected to two measurement systems at the same time. So, that rules out oil temp, oil press, and resistive fuel level sensors (some capacitive fuel level transducers may work with two gauges at the same time). Depending on the method used to measure RPM (transducer, p-lead, etc) we will likely work in parallel with your analog gauge. Same story for the amps (let us know if you'll be using our shunt or a hall effect sensor). As for volts, the EMS-D10 simply reports the voltage that it sees on its master power input, so there's no sensor to worry about there.

If there are other specific sensors you'd like to know about, feel free to reply here or give us a call.

I plan on using analog fuel level gauges as well as my D180 but with a switch so I can switch from one to the other as I want. Will that be ok ?

It will only work if they're not connected at the same time. If they're hooked up in parallel, then both indications will be wrong. A good human factors reason to not use two gauges in this fashion though is that one of them will ALWAYS be wrong and may lead you to believe that the fuel tanks are either very empty or very full.

An alternative to using two gauges with one sender is to instead back up the tank based sensors with a fuel-flow based fuel computer. The D180 can provide this capability when equipped with a fuel flow sensor.

I have a red cube for the fuel flow, I love the fuel computer in the FlightDEK, I just thought if it went off line for some reason I could flick a switch and the analog fuel gauges would come alive. I like to know how much fuel I have left thats all.
Good point about human factors though.
