Volt Issue

I recently changed out my 12 volt battery because it was having problems starting the plane after a long cold winter.  I kept it on a trickle charge - but it appears it did not work.

I replaced the battery and the plane (Velocity) starts right up.  However, I am now getting a reading of 0.1 volts on the volt widget.

The amps is reading correctly.  I checked the wires and appears to be no break.  If there was a break - would it just read 0.0?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.  Tim

Which of our products is this? If it's SkyView - the volt widget depends on a connection to pins 1 or 2 of the DB37 connection. If it's an EMS or FlightDEK-D180, the voltage is ready from the same wire that powers it. Also, are you sure it worked before you changed your battery?

Sorry,

This is for a Skyview, one 10 inch and a 7 inch. Yes, I am certain it worked before I changed the battery.  EMS works fine, just this change for volts.Tim

New Problem with EMS module - it went offline!!

I turned on the Main Battery, Skyview booted up.  I then looked at the Volts and it read 0 (same issue as below).  I then started the plane up, and then the big Red X was displayed over EMS section.

I turned plane off, turned on the Main Battery and the EMS did not display.  Started plane up, and still no EMS.  Brought plane back into hangar, checked all connectors - good.  I even used the test cable, EMS was not recognized as a device.  Switched connection on the Hub.  Did a force reload to network (red light blinks on the EMS) - still not being recognized on Skyview system.

Per Jake's earlier suggestion - I did remove the Volt symbol, and reload - still not reading.

Any suggestions?  Thanks  Tim

So the voltage not reading is likely to be a wiring issue at pin 1 or 2 on the EMS's 37 pin connector - ie, there's no voltage coming into the EMS.

But your more recent issue is indicative of either a SkyView Network wiring issue or perhaps a problem with the EMS module itself. Is the light on the EMS module fasting fast or slow? Flashing Fast means that the module is operating normally and is configured and communicating on a SkyView Network. Flashing Slowly means that the module is operating normally, but is not active on SkyView Network. IE, it has power but isn't communicating with SkyView Network.

When you go to network status, is the EMS even in the list?

Dynon,

I get a reading of 0.1 volts after flying for a bit.  The EMS does not show up on the network status.  The red light does blink, slowly.

I had a similar issue with my ARINC module - the culprit was the Xponder antenna, which I moved to the firewall of the plane, not far from the EMS. Yes, I will turn off the Xponder when I am next at the airport - is this the likely source of the problem?  Tim

Tim:

The two statements...

I get a reading of 0.1 volts after flying for a bit.

and

The EMS does not show up on the network status.

...are mutually exclusive. If the SV-EMS-220 isn't shown in NETWORK STATUS, you wouldn't be seeing an EMS page at all (to see the 0.1 volts). You would only see a large Red X where the EMS page should be.

Where is Pin 1 (long red wire) of the SV-EMS-220 connected in your electrical system? It sounds like you have a temperature-dependent intermittent connection at that point, and as it warms up, there's no connection to the red wire.

Yes, do the test with the transponder off (safely!), but this extended description sounds more like a wiring issue.

Sorry,

What I should have said, "when the EMS was working" I received an initial reading of 0 volts.  When flying for a while, I would get a reading 1 volt.  This would indicate the wire was indeed hooked up, and not broken.

The EMS now does not show up on the network status - a big red X.

I will pull the breaker for the Xponder this weekend, and see if the EMS works.  I shall report back.

If the EMS does not work, I will remove from the plane and call for an RMA.  Thanks  Tim
