If you are using grey code to hook to your transponder, and it has a wire for "D4," you can leave this wire disconnected.
D4 is used for altitudes above 35,000 feet, but the EFIS doesn't support this. Without D4 hooked up the transponder will read fine up to 35,000 feet. Not all transponders have a connection for D4 so this may not apply to all situations.
