Which country are you in? It wouldn't be legal in Canada, as we need two independent IFR approved navigation sources.

In the US, that would be IFR legal to fly VOR/ILS, but you can't fly any GPS procedures or enroute legally with the 496, and you have no DME, so you'd be pretty limited.

I'm in the US.

Not having GPS is fine for me; there are still alot of airports with VOR or ILS approaches, and I can always get vectors in route.

Thanks for your replies.

I'm planning on adding a Garmin 496 WAAS to my existing EFIS D100and EMS D120, with the HS34. I am told by my avionics shop that he will certify me for GPS/WAAS approaches--am I wrong ?

Your avionics shop needs to do some homework.  You cannot legally fly GPS/WAAS approaches using a handheld GPS.  You need a panel mount GPS that meets TSO-C146a, and it must be installed in accordance with AC20-130A before you can legally fly GPS/WAAS approaches.  See Table 1-1-6 and section 1-1-20 c 1 in the AIM.

My understanding is that the 496 is a panel mount--certainly ,my existing 296 is not-I'll check out the AIM, and will hace my avionics do also--
Thanks

The 496 is a handheld just like your 296. They would be hard to tell apart from two feet away. A company sells a mount that allows it to be mounted in the panel, but this doesn't make it legal for IFR. In fact, the mount says "NOT FOR IFR" right on it ;)

Find a new avionics shop! Obviously these people need to go back to school.

Sorry, Gent's--my avionics shop is installing the Garmin 430 WAAS--I have too many model numbers running around in my head.
Thanks for the input.

I just hope it's not the same shop that claimed they "certify" the 496 for GPS/WAAS aproaches...

He never made that claim--it is I who mixed up the model numbers in the forum--cause I have a 296 and just momentarily assumed I was moving up to a 496, safter seeing the panel in this discussion. Blame me, not him!
Cheers
