INDENTing Issue

So yesterday on my way back to my Airport ATC asked me to IDENT given the excess traffic due to one of our local airports being closed down for students due to a NFL Notam. Anyways, I kept just hitting IDENT on my D100 Skyview it would show IDENT and a # for a bit, then go back to that # with STDBY.

When pressing the "ON button before the IDENT" the IDENT # seemed to stay up without going to standby and provided the (R) as well next to it. My issue still was that ATC could not get my altitude. About 3 miles out on long final I decided to click ALT then hit INDENT one more time and asked ATC to check me, we had an ALT and rode it all the way back to the airport and they didn't loose it.

Does this sound like equipment problems or does one need to hit ALT first before IDENTing?

Thanks and Happy Holidays to your and your families everyone!

IDENT is a temporary condition - it's a right-now flash of hand-waving attention-getter on ATC's screen that only lasts a couple seconds and then the transponder returns to normal ops in its previous mode. What you're describing sounds like proper operation to me, other than operating in ALT versus STDBY mode.

You should operate the transponder in ALT mode anytime you are airborne, unless specifically asked by ATC to do otherwise.

So when I normally fly I hit "VFR" and it goes to a 1200 squawk. I only IDENT usually when asked to by ATC, and then I just press IDENT. Is the correct process to press just "ALT" to IDENT ALT? or is it IDENT then ALT?

Thanks

You should be in ALT mode as you are taking the runway for takeoff. Then your transponder will constantly be sending your ALTitude out with your squawk code (1200 if VFR) all the time. When ATC asks you to IDENT, it basically means that you are in a jumble of other traffic on their screen and they need your aircraft blip to flash at them a few times to show them exactly where you are, immediately. That's the only function of the IDENT button - it helps them find you quickly in a cluttered screen. That's critical if theres other traffic headed for you, or you might be headed for them, and they are trying to keep you all separated.

I hate to criticize, but this seems like the latest in a series of questions you have posted that are clearly described in the manual. Have you *read* the manual(s), and do you refer to them when trying to understand how to operate the SV system?

Plus...it seems you don't have a basic understanding of how transponders work, which should have been taught during your primary flight instruction. Perhaps some time with an instructor is in order here?

One other point. If your Dynon transponder is used for ADS-B out, it should be left in ALT for all operations, including on the ground. The system will determine the air/ ground state and transmit it appropriately.
